In 1982, a woman named Feng Aiqian stood outside the county government office in Yiwu, a small city in Zhejiang Province, China. She wasn’t a revolutionary. She was a mother. A mother who simply wanted to sell buttons, shoelaces, and hairpins to feed her family.

That afternoon, she had a conversation with the county secretary that would change not only her life but the destiny of an entire city.

“Why is it wrong to work hard and earn an honest living?”

The secretary listened. And then he did something extraordinary — he said yes. That “yes” sparked a movement. From a humble market of 700 concrete stalls built with just 9,000 yuan, Yiwu transformed into what the world now knows as the “World’s Supermarket”.
